In order for society to meet the basic social needs of its members, social institutions, which are not buildings, or an organization or even people, but a system whose of social norms, mores and folkways that help make people feel important. Social institutions, according to our textbook, is defined as a fundamental component of this organization in which individuals, occupying defined statues, are â€Å"regulated by social norms, public opinion, law and religion† (Amato 2004, p.961). Social institutions are meant to meet people’s basic needs and enable the society to survive. Because social institutions prescribe socially accepted beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviors, they exert considerable social control over individuals.†¦show more content†¦The definition historically is â€Å"people related by blood, marriage, or adoption†. The U.S. Census defines family as â€Å"a group of people united by the ties of marriage, blood, or adoption and cons tituting a single household†. William Goode, a sociologist who did research on family life, marriage and divorce, defines family as â€Å"at least 2 adult persons of opposite sex who reside together, have division of labor, engage in economic and social exchange, share many things in common, have parental relations with their children and the children have sibling relations†. Sociologist William F. Ogburn argues that the industrialization and urbanization of society has stripped the family of many of the traditional functions. Due to this factor alone, the family’s role has been diminished to something strictly psychological, and that is to socialize children, and to provide emotional support for family members. Talcott Parsons defined the family as serving a basic function for society-at-large that included sexual behavior norms and values. There is a growing opinion that social and civic agencies are taking over parental responsibilities due to two-income families, a burst in technology over the past forty years and single-parent homes.
